In 1975 the clock was turned back in Cambodia to Year Zero. The reign of the Khmer Rouge had begun. In the four years that followed more than 20 percent of the population was killed, starved or worked to death. When the regime was toppled in 1979, the country was utterly broken. Trust in ones' neighbors, belief in a system of justice, and any sense of community had disappeared -- Cambodia was void of all the elements of society.
